The University of Hohenheim was born from a catastrophe: the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia disrupted the global climate and helped cause a devastating famine in the Kingdom of Württemberg, so in 1818 King William I set up an Agricultural Academy in Hohenheim Palace to radically improve the kingdom's nutrition through teaching and experimentation — 18 students and three professors at the start. Stuttgart's oldest university, it made history again in 1923 when Margarete von Wrangell became the first female full professor at a German university. A university in title since 1967, it now teaches approximately 9,000 students, most of them in its highly ranked faculty of business, economics and social sciences.
