About HU Berlin

The Humboldt University of Berlin was established in 1809 by Frederick William III on the initiative of Wilhelm von Humboldt, Fichte and Schleiermacher, and opened in 1810 on Unter den Linden, where its main campus still stands. It pioneered the Humboldtian model of higher education that shaped universities across Europe and the West, and was widely regarded as the world's preeminent university for the natural sciences in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Renamed in 1949 in honour of Alexander and Wilhelm von Humboldt, it teaches around 35,000 students in some 171 disciplines; its faculty and alumni include 57 Nobel laureates — the most of any German university — among them Albert Einstein and Max Planck.
