Kiel University — the Christiana Albertina — was founded in 1665 by Christian Albert, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, and is the largest, oldest and most prestigious university in Schleswig-Holstein; until 1866 it was simultaneously Germany's northernmost university and the second-largest university of Denmark.
