About Universität Leipzig

Leipzig University, founded on 2 December 1409 by Frederick I, Elector of Saxony, and his brother William II, Margrave of Meissen, is Germany's second-oldest university by consecutive years of existence — it has taught and researched without interruption for over 600 years. Its alumni include 57 prime ministers and presidents, most famously Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany from 2005 to 2021, and the university is associated with 19 Nobel laureates, most recently Svante Pääbo in 2022. Leibniz, Goethe, Nietzsche, Heisenberg and Wagner all passed through its halls.
