The University of Münster — until 2023 the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität — has roots reaching back to the city's Jesuit College of 1588 and even to the Liebfrauen-Überwasser convent founded in 1040, whose seal it took and whose funds, after the convent's dissolution in 1773, were used to found the university on 16 April 1780. With more than 43,000 students and over 120 fields of study in 15 departments, it is Germany's fifth-largest university and one of the centres of German intellectual life; its professors and former students have won two Nobel Prizes, one Fields Medal and ten Leibniz Prizes.
