The University of Passau was established on 1 January 1973 by resolution of the Bavarian State Parliament, making it one of the youngest universities in Bavaria — with the most modern campus in the state — yet its roots run deep: an Institute for Catholic Studies was incorporated in 1622 into the Gymnasium founded by Fürst Leopold in 1612, later became a prince-bishop's academy in 1773, and grew into a philosophical-theological university in 1923. Today Passau is home to five faculties and 39 undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.
