RWTH Aachen University began with a charity donation of 5,000 talers made in 1858 to the Prussian prince Frederick William, who chose to use it to found the first Prussian institute of technology; Aachen beat Cologne for the seat, and lectures started on 10 October 1870 — during the Franco-Prussian War — with 223 students and 32 teachers, training engineers above all for the mining industry of the Ruhr. Today it is one of Germany's oldest and leading technical universities and, with about 45,000 students across ten faculties and some 290 institutes, the second-largest; a TU9 founding member, it is funded as a University of Excellence.
