The University of Cologne was established in 1388 as the fourth university in the Holy Roman Empire, after Prague, Vienna and Heidelberg, with a charter signed by Pope Urban VI. Closed in 1798, it was re-established in 1919 and is now one of the largest universities in Germany, with around 43,594 students. A member of the U15 association of research-intensive universities, it hosts five Clusters of Excellence — including ECONtribute on markets and public policy — and counts five Nobel laureates among its alumni, faculty and researchers.
