Bocconi University was established in Milan in 1902 as the first Italian university to offer a degree in economics. Its founder, the merchant Ferdinando Bocconi, created it in memory of his son Luigi, who died in the Battle of Adwa in 1896. A private, non-profit university devoted to the social sciences — economics, management, finance, law, political science and, increasingly, data science — it moved to its current Via Sarfatti campus in 1941, established the SDA Bocconi School of Management in 1971, launched Italy's first MBA in 1974 and co-founded the CEMS alliance in 1988. Through SDA Bocconi it holds the triple accreditation AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA; its new urban campus, designed by the SANAA studio, was completed in 2019.
