About Università di Pavia

The University of Pavia is one of the world's oldest universities: a higher-education institution existed in the city as early as AD 825 under the Frankish king Lothar I, and in 1361 Emperor Charles IV formally established the studium generale, granting it the teaching privileges of Paris and Bologna. Championed by Gian Galeazzo Visconti, it remained the sole university of the Milan area until the end of the 19th century. Pavia has no single campus — its buildings are scattered through the city, which serves as a 'city campus' — and today counts 18 departments, a celebrated university history museum and botanical garden, and a clinical partnership with the Policlinico San Matteo.
