About Università di Bologna
The University of Bologna is regarded as the oldest university in continuous operation in the world: teaching began around 1088, and in 1158 Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa granted it the charter Authentica habita. Its Latin motto, Alma Mater Studiorum, carries that founding date. A public research university with over 90,000 students — among the largest in Europe — it operates campuses in Bologna, Cesena, Forlì, Ravenna and Rimini, plus branches abroad including Buenos Aires. Its history runs from housing Copernicus during the Renaissance to firsts for women in academia: Bettisia Gozzadini, the first woman to earn a university degree and teach, and Laura Bassi, the first woman to hold a salaried university professorship.
