Luiss Guido Carli was founded in Rome in 1974, when a group of entrepreneurs led by Umberto Agnelli redesigned the pre-existing Pro Deo University (established 1966) into a modern social-sciences university; it took the Luiss name in 1977. Guido Carli — former Governor of the Bank of Italy and president of Confindustria — served as its president from 1978 to 1993, and in 1994 the university was renamed in his memory. Private and backed by Confindustria, Italy's confederation of industry, Luiss began with Economics and Political Science, added Law in 1982, and after a 2011 reorganisation is structured into six departments. It sits between Rome's Parioli and Trieste quarters and teaches many of its programmes entirely in English.
