Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore is a private Catholic research university inaugurated in Milan on 7 December 1921, born of the project of the Franciscan friar and physician Agostino Gemelli and his circle, who had founded the Istituto Giuseppe Toniolo in 1919. Since 1930 its main campus has occupied the ancient monastery of Sant'Ambrogio in central Milan, with further campuses in Brescia, Piacenza, Cremona and Rome. Organised into twelve faculties and seven postgraduate schools, it teaches in Italian and English; its School of Economics opened in 1947. The Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome — named after the founder — serves as the teaching hospital of its medical school.
