Sapienza University of Rome was founded on 20 April 1303 by decree of Pope Boniface VIII — the first pontifical university — making it one of the oldest universities in the world; with over 110,000 students it is also the largest in Europe. Reorganised in 1431 by Pope Eugene IV into the four schools of Law, Medicine, Philosophy and Theology, it took the name 'Sapienza' (wisdom) in the 1650s. After Rome's capture in 1870 it became the main university of the newly unified Italy's capital, and in 1935 moved to the Città Universitaria campus planned by Marcello Piacentini. Its alumni include ten Nobel laureates, prime ministers and one pope.
