The Georgia Institute of Technology was established in Atlanta in 1885 as the Georgia School of Technology, part of the New South drive to build an industrial economy after the Civil War — it initially offered a single degree, in mechanical engineering. The name changed in 1948 to reflect its evolution from trade school into a technical institute and research university. Today Georgia Tech has the largest enrolment in the University System of Georgia, satellite campuses in Savannah and in Metz, France, and seven colleges with about 30 departments centred on science and technology.
