Iowa State University in Ames was founded in 1858 as the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm, and became one of the nation's first land-grant institutions when Iowa accepted the Morrill Act's provisions in 1862; it took its present name, Iowa State University of Science and Technology, in 1959.
