Marquette University is a private Jesuit research university in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, established as Marquette College on 28 August 1881 by John Henni, the first Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, and named after the 17th-century missionary and explorer Father Jacques Marquette. Initially an all-male institution, it became the first coeducational Catholic university in the world in 1909, and officially became a university in 1907.
