The University of Nevada, Reno is the state's flagship public university and primary land-grant institution — written into Nevada's constitution of 1864 to receive Morrill Act funds, and founded on 12 October 1874 in the railroad town of Elko before moving to Reno in 1885. Its first building, Morrill Hall, was dedicated in 1886, and instruction began in 1887 with fifty students. Today it is an R1 research university, home to the Reynolds School of Journalism, from which six Pulitzer Prize winners have graduated.
