Washington University in St. Louis is a private research university founded in 1853 by a group of civic leaders concerned by the Midwest's lack of higher-learning institutions, and named for the first US president. It held its first classes in 1854 in downtown St. Louis and moved in 1905 to its campus northwest of Forest Park — whose first buildings had been lent to the 1904 Summer Olympics and World's Fair before students could occupy them. A member of the Association of American Universities since 1923, it comprises ten schools spanning more than 150 undergraduate and 80 master's programmes, its business school among them, on the Danforth and Medical campuses.
