The University of Basel is Switzerland's oldest university and among the oldest in the world: its founding deed was a papal bull of Pius II of 12 November 1459, and the opening ceremony was held in Basel Minster on 4 April 1460 — after the city had already hosted a temporary university of the clergy during the Council of Basel, between 1432 and 1448. In over 500 years it has been home to Erasmus of Rotterdam, Paracelsus, Daniel Bernoulli, Leonhard Euler, Friedrich Nietzsche and Carl Gustav Jung, and it is associated with ten Nobel laureates. In 2020 it had 13,139 students, 27% of them international, and its university library is the largest in Switzerland.
