The University of Zurich was founded on 29 April 1833 by merging the city's existing colleges of theology — the Carolinum established by the reformer Huldrych Zwingli in 1525 — law and medicine with a new faculty of philosophy. It was the first university in Europe founded by a democratic state rather than a monarch or the church. Today UZH is Switzerland's largest university, with around 28,700 students across seven faculties spanning philosophy, medicine, economics, law, science, theology and veterinary medicine — the widest range of subjects of any Swiss institution.
