About University of Geneva (GSEM)

The University of Geneva was founded in 1559 by the French theologian John Calvin as the Academy of Geneva, a seminary meant to be the centre of public education in Protestant Geneva — teaching not only pastors but magistrates, with Law added as early as 1565. A centre of Enlightenment scholarship in later centuries, it dropped its religious affiliations and became officially secular in 1873. Today it is the third-largest university in Switzerland by students, with almost 40% of them coming from over 150 foreign countries, and a member of the League of European Research Universities and the Coimbra Group.
