The University of St. Gallen (HSG) traces its origins to 1898, when the Cantonal Parliament of St. Gallen established an academy for trade, commerce and administration; lectures began in 1899, making it one of the earliest institutions of its kind. Renamed several times as it grew, it has carried its current name since the mid-1990s. A public university owned by the canton, it specialises in business administration, economics, law, international affairs and computer science, and hosts Switzerland's largest business administration faculty. Its campus on Rosenberg Hill, overlooking the old town, is listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance; the school holds the EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA 'triple crown' and is a member of CEMS.
