The Università della Svizzera italiana, established by cantonal law in 1995 and opened in 1996, is the only public university in Switzerland where Italian is an official language of instruction, alongside a broad range of programmes in English. The public university of Italian-speaking Switzerland, it has five faculties across Lugano, Mendrisio — home of the Academy of Architecture — and Bellinzona, and a strongly international profile: 4,749 students in 2025 from more than 100 countries, around 60 percent from outside Switzerland. Its research network includes the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence and the Institute of Finance, part of the Swiss Finance Institute; in 2024 it placed ninth worldwide in the Times Higher Education ranking of the best small universities.
