The University of Bern was founded in 1834, but its roots go back to the sixteenth century, when a collegiate school was created to train pastors after the Reformation; in 1805 the government of Bern turned that theological college into an academy where law and medicine could be studied alongside theology. Regulated and financed by the canton of Bern, it is a comprehensive university in the Swiss capital, offering a broad choice of programmes across eight faculties and some 150 institutes, with around 19,000 students.
