About Università di Cagliari

The University of Cagliari was founded in 1606 as the Studium Generalis Kalaritanum, modelled on the old Spanish universities of Salamanca, Valladolid and Lleida, and began operating in 1620 under the privilege of King Philip III of Spain. Under the House of Savoy its science faculties expanded, and its late-eighteenth-century building by Saverio Belgrano di Famolasco still houses the rectorate. Today the university is organised into 11 faculties, with a modern 73-hectare campus at Monserrato hosting the sciences and one of its teaching hospitals — Sardinia's largest academic institution, in the island's capital.
