The University of Catania was founded on 19 October 1434 by King Alfonso of Sicily, with papal recognition following in 1444 — the oldest university in Sicily and among the thirty oldest in the world. Teaching began in 1445 with six professors and ten students in the faculties of Medicine, Philosophy, Law and Theology; the first degree was awarded in 1449, and from the sixteenth century the university bore the proud name Siculorum Gymnasium, the only Sicilian institution empowered to grant degrees equal to Bologna's. With over 40,000 students it is today the island's largest university.
