About Università di Firenze

The University of Florence descends from the Studio Fiorentino established by the Florentine Republic in 1321 and recognised by Pope Clement VI in 1349 — home of Italy's first faculty of theology — though the institution wandered to Pisa and back with the fortunes of the Medici. Its modern form dates from 1859, when Tuscany's institutions of higher study merged into the Istituto di Studi Superiori, renamed a university by parliament in 1923. Today UNIFI teaches around 50,000 students across 12 schools in one of Europe's great historic cities.
