About Università di Genova

The University of Genoa traces to the city's medieval colleges of law, theology, medicine and arts: the College of Theology was established by papal bull of Sixtus IV in 1471, and the statute of the College of Medicine followed in 1481, the university's founding date. In 1569 the Republic's Senate entrusted the colleges to the Jesuits, whose seventeenth-century palace by Bartolomeo Bianco — in use from 1640 — remains the university's main building on the climbing streets of the old city. Today UniGe is one of Italy's largest universities and the academic anchor of the Ligurian coast.
