The University of Macerata was established as a school of law by the commune in September 1290 through Pope Nicholas IV, making it one of Europe's oldest universities still in operation. Leo X authorised it to confer doctoral degrees in 1518 — so that poor young men of the Marche need not travel far for higher education — and a bull of Paul III in 1540 made it the fourth university of the Papal States, modelled closely on Bologna. Long dominated by the study of law, it is today the only Italian university devoted entirely to the humanities and social sciences.
