The University of Milano-Bicocca is a public university officially established on 10 June 1998 to relieve the University of Milan, which by the 1990s had grown overcrowded with some 90,000 students. Its campus rose in the Bicocca district of northern Milan, on grounds occupied by the Pirelli industrial complex until the 1980s and redesigned by the architect Vittorio Gregotti as part of one of Europe's great urban-renewal projects. A deliberately multidisciplinary university, it spans economics, statistics, law, medicine, the natural sciences and psychology, with research laboratories and student residences woven into the regenerated industrial quarter.
