The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia is among Europe's oldest, founded in 1175 — its origins as a Studium reach back to 1175 in Modena and 1188 in Reggio. The medieval university faded by 1338, survived as public lectureships, and was re-established in Modena in the 1680s, receiving an imperial charter in 1685. Its registers carry the historian Ludovico Antonio Muratori (graduated 1694), the playwright Carlo Goldoni and, in the twentieth century, Sandro Pertini, future President of the Italian Republic. Today some 20,000 students study across its two Emilian cities.
