The University of Palermo was officially founded in 1806, though higher education in the city goes back to 1498, when medicine and law were first taught, and to the Jesuit Collegio Massimo, which awarded degrees in theology and philosophy from the late sixteenth century. After Italian unification the university modernised under the chemist Stanislao Cannizzaro and the Arabist Michele Amari. Since 1984 its administrative seat has been Palazzo Steri, one of Palermo's most storied buildings, beside the university's own botanical garden — among the largest and oldest academic institutions of Sicily.
