The University of Perugia was elevated to Studium Generale on 8 September 1308 by Pope Clement V's bull Super specula, building on a school of arts active since around 1200. Pope John XXII granted degree-conferring privileges in civil and canon law in 1318 and in medicine and arts in 1321, and in 1355 Emperor Charles IV raised it to imperial university — a favour granted to help the city recover from the plague of 1348–49. Its seal joins Saint Herculan and the crowned griffin of Perugia, church and commune together. It remains Umbria's public university.
