Roma Tre University was founded in 1992 at the urging of professors from La Sapienza, becoming the third public university of the Roman metropolitan area — hence the name. It rose in the semi-industrial Ostiense district, and its defining trait has been urban regeneration: old buildings and factory premises reclaimed as places of study and research. Already Rome's second-largest university by enrolment and among Italy's largest research institutions, the city's youngest university received Pope Francis's visit in February 2017.
