The University of Sassari was founded through the bequest of Alessio Fontana, a member of Emperor Charles V's imperial chancellery, in 1558, and officially opened in May 1562 under Jesuit direction. Today it counts over 18,000 students and about 700 teachers across its departments and institutes. Its consistency is its calling card: first among Italy's medium-sized universities in the 2009–10 Censis rankings, it has stayed near the top of that table ever since, taking third place nationally for 2024–25.
