About Università di Torino

The University of Turin is one of Europe's oldest universities, founded as a studium in 1404 at the initiative of Prince Ludovico di Savoia. Closed in 1536 after the French invasion of the Savoy lands, it was re-established three decades later by Duke Emmanuel Philibert, and the reforms of Victor Amadeus II made it a model for other universities, complete with the Collegio delle Province for students from outside Turin. In the nineteenth century it became a point of reference for Italian Positivism, counting scholars such as Cesare Lombroso and Arturo Graf, and in the twentieth it stood among the centres of Italian anti-fascism.
