About Università di Udine

The University of Udine was founded in 1978 as part of Friuli's reconstruction plan after the devastating 1976 earthquake — a university literally willed into being by its people, through a petition of over 125,000 signatures. Its mission was to give the Friulian community an independent centre of advanced study, and it remains the only Italian university where another language, Friulian, is officially recognised alongside Italian. With 14,986 students enrolled in 2020/21 and satellite seats in Gemona, Gorizia and Pordenone, it is also a leading centre for the study of the Friulian language itself.
