The University of Verona gained autonomy in 1982, but its story began with the city itself: in 1959 mayor Giorgio Zanotto put a Faculty of Economics and Commerce on the Municipal Council's agenda, and by November of that year the free faculty was inaugurated in Palazzo Giuliari — still the rectorate today — donated by Countess Giuliari Tusini. From 1963 the University of Padua recognised the Veronese faculty as its own branch, later adding medicine and law, until Verona won full university status. Organised into 13 departments, it was rated Italy's best non-private university by Il Sole 24 Ore in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
